Taare Zameen Par , a sensitive story of an eight-year-old dyslexic child, was selected as India's entry to the foreign language category for Oscars at the 81st annual Academy awards.

This was announced by filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who headed the film federation of India jury to select the film in Mumbai on Friday. "It is a film that is extremely close to my heart. It first sensitised me as a parent and as a person and then went on to have the same effect on the audiences in India and across the globe," Aamir, who is shooting in Ladakh for Raj Kumar Hirani's 3 Idiots , said.

In 2001, I wrote a film script for a friend, who was a film student in New York and had come to India to make a film. It got shelved due to lack of finance. The script was passed on to another director. He kept it for a year and a half,Â but he had financial troubles too.

The film begins like any other Suresh Gopi film; that is, with action. Sivan saves a 'damsel in distress' Kanakam (Sindhu Menon) from the clutches of hooligans. He is an orphan who survives on menial jobs like helping the nearby teashop owner Panniker (Nedumudi Venu), (who treats him like a family member) and repairing footwear. Panniker takes the initiative to get Sivan and Kanakam married. But, Sivan's marital bliss ends as Kanakam dies during childbirth. Sivan is further tormented by the fear of the goons returning to take their revenge.

With almost a fresh cast, barring Vamsi Krishna (one of the heroes of Happy Days ), Kanmani approaches this subject in a light and to some extent, a humorous way but also brings out the negative side of it and throws in some sermons towards the end. Krishna (Vamsi Krishna) hails from a village but manages to get a job at a call centre in Hyderabad thanks to his friend Srinivas who works there. He joins it along with his dear childhood friend Swati (debutante Priyanka). Krishna lives in an apartment along with his friends and colleagues Srinivas, Mallinka, Munna. Swati lives in a girls' hostel.

I said it is not uncommon for journalists to turn up early for a much discussed film at the film festival -- in this case, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). By the time I reached,Â there were already more than 100 people in the line.Â By the time the film started, every seat at the 580-seat theatre was taken, and there were more than 50 reporters waiting outside. They were hoping to grab a seat in case people walked out a few minutes after the film started (not an unusual occurrence at the film festivals that screen half a dozen films simultaneously starting around 9 am). But there were no walkouts, and the film -- about a teenager from the slums, who becomes a champion of the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire and immaterially arouses the suspicion of a police inspector -- received a rapturous applause. Twice.
