By avoiding cigarettes, exercising regularly, eating healthily and keeping weight in check, 55% of early deaths from chronic diseases could be avoided.

For information about elastic webbing see http://www.elastic-tapes.com/elastic-webbing.html.

Following all four lifestyle tips could cut 44% of cancer deaths and 72% of cardiovascular deaths, the study of nearly 80,000 nurses suggests. In the 24-year study, 28% of the 8,882 deaths could be attributed to smoking and 55% to the combination of smoking, being overweight, not doing enough exercise and a poor diet.

Progress in cutting the number of deaths among children under five is still "grossly insufficient" in some parts of the world, Unicef has warned.

For information about elastic tapes see http://www.elastic-tapes.com

Its report, published in the Lancet, shows there has been a fall of 28% in child deaths since 1990. But the UN children's agency warns many poorer countries will not meet the 2015 Millennium Development Goal of cutting that figure by two thirds.

The Archives of Disease in Childhood study found samples from babies who had died for no apparent reason often carried potentially-harmful bacteria.

Here is Elastic Tapes Homepage.

Some experts believe toxins produced by these bacteria could trigger a chemical storm, which overwhelms the baby, resulting in sudden death. There are around 250 sudden infant deaths a year in the UK. The majority are never fully explained.

The Circulation study appears to back this up and the heart trace changes seen were characteristic of poor oxygen supply to the heart. The electrocardiograms of the 48 patients studied, who had recently been hospitalised for heart attack, unstable angina or worsening symptoms of coronary heart disease, showed unusual changes called ST-segment depression.

Venomous clues in lung bug battle

Bacterial colonies in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients use chemicals found in snake venom to attack them, say UK researchers.

Check out underwear elastic products.

The Pseudomonas bug lives in "biofilm" communities in the lungs, becoming resistant to antibiotics and increasingly hard to treat. When bacteria grow in the body, they can either live as individuals or join forces to form "biofilms", which appear to be able to remain in a semi-dormant state and cause long-lasting problems.

Down's signs 'seen in stem cells'

The team from Barts and the Royal London say the changes to embryonic stem cells are caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21.

For information about elastic tapes see http://www.elastic-tapes.com

The study, in the American Journal of Human Genetics, says the extra chromosome sets off a chain of genetic changes in the developing embryo. Down syndrome belongs to a group of conditions called "aneuploidies", which are defined by an abnormal loss or gain of genetic material, such as fragments of chromosomes or whole chromosomes.

Gene 'links food and fertility'

A gene, TORC1, appears to act as a "master switch", switching off food intake and allowing pregnancy.

For information about elastic tapes see http://www.elastic-tapes.com

The gene probably offered an evolutionary advantage, by stopping women getting pregnant in times when food was scarce, the researchers said. Both underweight and severely overweight women may have fertility problems, and the research at Salk Institute in California is suggesting that TORC1 may play a role in both.
