Rajiv is a successful builder whose atheism is established early on when he refuses to allow workers at his construction site to build a small temple to commemorate a stone that they believe resembles Lord Ganesh. Rajiv is assisted in his work by the decidedly shifty looking Anshuman (Kenny Desai) and Madhu (Ashwini Kalsekar).

L eRoi Moore, the renowned saxophonist for Dave Matthews Band, died yesterday of complications from injuries he suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident. He was 46.

The accident in question took place almost two months ago, and the exact cause of death has not yet been revealed. On June 30, Moore crashed his ATV on his farm outside Charlottesville, Virginia, but was discharged and returned to his Los Angeles home to begin physical therapy. He later returned to the hospital after experiencing complications during recovery.

It's a film about catapulting a finely polished 'star' to what the industry feels is his rightful spot in the firmament, and a film that makes no bones out of playing an old Kishore Kumar song a half-dozen times to set the mood in the first half and then doing the same for a new KK song in the second half. So yeah, it's that kinda film.

And it's not bad, honestly. Bachna is well-cast, joyously escapist and throws in surprising character maturity every now and then. The fun romantic bits are breezy and click well, while even the much weaker emotional sequences -- which do come across as heavy-handed and presumptous -- throw up a couple of lines of dialogue that show the thought that has gone into the characters and the situation. That said, it's about 40 minutes too long, the first and the second half feel like they are two different movies -- and one wishes they were. (Lord, could the YRF boys really have missed out on an instant-sequel?) It's also a film shamelessly celebrating the Bollywood bratpack -- and I don't just mean that because Ranbir's character is ridiculously well off, and only works if and when he wants to. I mean that because, in a film named after a song picturised on his father, his character is named Raj like his iconic granddaddy. And like the protagonist in another Europe-based romance.

How does it work really? One fine DVD later, a well-established writer decides to turn director. He gets this brainwave of using this million-dollar raking formula of a can't-go-wrong script (what happens when a down and out guy gets to be God for ten days), incorporates his own twisted sensibilities that lack both detail and imagination and then signs on a bunch of saleable stars. It's not the first time. It's definitely not the last time.

Images ] fan will grudge an off-season release (guess that's what you call a second film within a year for an actor who usually does one film in three years.) of the star. Thanks to director P Vasu for convincing Rajni that there is enough in his script and treatment to do a whirlwind 40-day shoot. But looking at the finished product, the mind boggles at what could have been.

On the one hand you have a premise that talks about a star and his long lost friend. On the other, you have Rajnikanth, whose real life so starkly mirrors the storyline. Shouldn't this have been the perfect vehicle that tells us, or rather shows us, what the real Rajnikanth is like? The real Rajnikanth, who not unlike the character Ashok Kumar, has not just one but a handful of friends who supported him during his early struggling days and who the star still holds very dear. The real Rajnikanth, who does not shirk from sporting his grey stubble in public without a worry about that exclusive preserve of celebrity called image. An image, which most other stars spend a lifetime cultivating and then yet another in getting a makeover.

Ugly Aur Pagli falls into that same old Bollywood trap, trying to camouflage a ripoff as an 'inspired by' film by replacing plot-points with extraneous songs and playing havoc with the narrative. Anyway, Ugly starts off all right. Kabir is a dweeb, who runs into a scarily sloshed Kuhu (Mallika Sherawat), saves her life and doesn't sleep with her, and the film is essentially a story of how the masochistically mediocre man gets to know the sadistically slap-happy siren. Yes, the bondage theme runs deep as the girl whacks the life out of the boy, and you can almost imagine him in a gimp mask -- while I'm genuinely surprised she doesn't weild an actual whip. Heh.
